Feeney and the FBI Anniversary Week 7 Deadly Questions for "Representative #3"

QUESTION #2: Why did you receive the same Abramoff email as a former aide who pleaded guilty to conspiracy?

For Immediate Release: April 17, 2008

TALLAHASSEE - Things are still not going well for Florida's most corrupt member of Congress, Tom Feeney (R-24th). His use of taxpayer money on mailings and phone calls for his own political gain is being criticized by the Orlando Sentinel.

And we're only six short days away from the first anniversary of the public relationship between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the man it affectionately refers to as "Representative #3."

On April 23, 2007, news broke that the FBI was investigating Feeney for his connection with convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff. To celebrate the occasion, the Florida Democratic Party will be asking Feeney "Seven Deadly Questions" that he has left unanswered.

Question #2: Why did you receive the same Abramoff email as a former aide who pleaded guilty to conspiracy?

An e-mail obtained by the St. Petersburg Times on April 25, 2007 showed that Abramoff's office sent specific instructions on how to report the trip expenses to a handful of people, including Feeney's congressional assistant.

The e-mail, written by Abramoff's assistant in September 2003, a month after the trip, was sent to Feeney's executive assistant Eliza Baker. Others on the e-mail list included Mark Zachares, a former House aide who pleaded guilty to conspiracy for his relationship with Abramoff.

According to court documents, Zachares said he knew the expense details for the Scotland trip were lies coordinated by Abramoff. (E-mail details false trip data , St. Petersburg Times, 4/26/07)

"Tom Feeney owes his voters answers. He received the same email that detailed how to lie about his 2003 Scotland trip as a person who pleaded guilty to conspiracy with convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff. With this clear evidence of communication from Abramoff's office to Tom Feeney about how to report the trip to the ethics committee, it's clear Feeney's claims of ignorance about this just don't add up," Florida Democratic Party spokesman Mark Bubriski said.

The Florida Democratic Party will release one deadly question a day through April 23, exactly one year after news broke that Tom Feeney was under investigation by the FBI.
