Crist Said He Wanted To Outlaw Portable Classrooms. In February 2001, while Education Commissioner: "Crist wants to pass a law outlawing the structures in two years. Crist said two state lawmakers plan to introduce legislation that will prohibit Florida's 67 school districts from using portables as classrooms by July 1, 2003 - although the legislation doesn't come with additional money attached to it to build schools...‘We all believed that this was going to be addressed and taken care of and here we are four years later and we still have kids in leaky portables while administrators are in luxury buildings,' Crist said." Crist Said Portable Classrooms Were An Answer To Overcrowded Schools. Just a few months later, "during a visit to a portable classroom manufacturing plant in Manatee County Friday, Crist said safer and stronger portables could be one answer to overcrowded schools in Florida. ‘I'm glad I came here,' said Crist as he toured Modular Structures, 1302 Rome Ave. for 45 minutes. ‘These look like the permanent structures we were trying to find.'"
