Christine Jennings Launches 2008 Campaign
Christine Jennings, a leader in the fight for verifiable elections, has announced that she will run again for the 13th Congressional District seat! In 2006, the votes of more than 18,000 people in Sarasota County went unrecorded and likely cost Christine the election. We need to send her to Washington where she will fight for a new direction in Iraq, a balanced budget, tax cuts that help families who need them most, and affordable healthcare for the 45 million Americans who lack coverage. Millions of Americans (Finally) Get a Pay Raise
Today, millions of Americans got their first pay raise in over a decade with a higher federal minimum wage - thanks to the Democratic-led Congress. Although Floridians have been fortunate to have a higher minimum wage in recent years (due to a 2004 ballot initiative - not the Republican Legislature), the new federal law will positively affect nearly 13 million people across the country with an increase of 70 cents per hour today, from $5.15 to $5.85 today, and additional increases to bring it to $7.25 in 2009. Congresswoman Corrine Brown (D-3rd), who has long fought for the working poor, lauded the change: "This is a great day, a day the American people have been waiting for far too long... Helping the poor is a theme that is stressed throughout the Bible, and it is our responsibility, as Members of Congress, to do our part to keep [the minimum wage] at a fair level."
Mahoney Leads on Farm Bill, Hopes to Deliver "A Win" For Florida Agriculture
Congressman Tim Mahoney (D-16th) believes that the 2007 Farm Bill, set to be voted on in Congress later this week, is going to be a win for Florida's economy and farmers. "I have been proud to represent Florida agriculture at the table as the Farm Bill was written and will continue fighting to make sure the bill keeps its commitments to programs important to our state," Mahoney said. Democratic Reunion This Saturday!
On July 28th, take an afternoon to clean up a park. Plant a tree. Hold a recycling drive. And while you're there, talk to your neighbors, make new friends, and start planting the seeds for a Democratic victory in 2008. This year's Democratic Reunion will focus on the environment and what we can do to help curb climate change. Join an event, or start your own, at: http://www.democrats.org/democraticreunion
While you're at it, don't forget to sign the Five Point Pledge to show your support for responsible action on climate change. We have a goal of 10,000 petitions to be delivered to the Republican Leaders in the Florida Legislature.
