Welcome from Chairman Smith

Over the past year, the Florida Democratic Party has been preparing for the process by which we will select our delegates to the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. We are calling our new delegate selection system, “Florida’s Time to Shine.”

Under a plan approved unanimously last June by the State Executive Committee, Florida Democrats will use a Caucus/Convention system for selecting our National Convention delegates. Through our process, we will choose 300 delegates, 23 alternates and 27 standing committee members to represent Florida at the National Convention. This is the largest delegation we’ve ever sent to the Convention and it means that more Democrats than ever before from all across the state will be a part of this exciting and historic event.

Our selection process begins on May 5, with Democratic Caucuses held in every county. These caucuses will elect 1,500 delegates to a special state convention June 1-3 in Tampa where state convention delegates will choose Florida’s National Convention delegates.

The County Caucuses present an unparalleled opportunity to build our local party organizations. This is a new process and it opens new avenues for informing, energizing and activating our Democratic base.

To assist you in planning and participating in your county’s caucus, the FDP has prepared a set of materials to help you familiarize yourself with our process. I encourage you to review these documents at your earliest convenience. I have designated Nicholas J. Pellito on my staff to assist you with questions you might have about the delegate selection process. Please feel free to contact him at (850) 222-3411 or npellito@fladems.com.

I thank you for your interest and cooperation in this important effort, and I look forward to working with you in this critical election year.

Sincerely,

Rod Smith, Chairman of the Florida Democratic Party
